[US] Lit! Squire Foundation and SB Public Market Offer Proust-While-You-Wait

Image of [US] Lit! Squire Foundation and SB Public Market Offer Proust-While-You-WaitThis freaky french vending machine at the SB public market wants you to push its buttons. You've nothing to fear but literature!
Francis Ford Coppola—writer, director, producer, Brando-wrangler—is a raving fan of the short story. In 1997 (for instance) he launched the much-garlanded literary and art vehicle Zoetrope: All-Story. So it was that when Coppola learned of a nutty Roald-Dahl-like gizmo whose minimalist three buttons promised a new approach to literature, his famous auteur beard broke into a grin and he dove in with brio. “He’d found us through his daughter in Paris and was our first client in the US,” says Kristan Leroy, export director for French publisher Short Édition. “The first installation in the U.S. was at his café Zoetrope in San Francisco.”

Share the love of short stories: lucky-dip stories at your school

Image of Share the love of short stories: lucky-dip stories at your schoolMillions of stories for a more poetic world !
When I read about the fabulous Short Story Dispenser by French publisher Short Edition, I imagined how wonderful it would be for each school to have their own short story dispensing machine. Then, as I was walking along a corridor of my own school, I noticed that there is a designated wall where students can leave their artwork, which that day was mostly photos and illustrations. I started wondering how many schools might have similar boards or walls for students which could be used for sharing not only visual arts, but also stories.

A new kind of vending machine came to Carolina this week, dispensing free short stories written by UNC-Chapel Hill students, faculty and staff.
The literary vending machines print a blend of original, classic and contemporary works of literature at eight locations throughout campus and in Chapel Hill, including the Carolina Union, Adams School of Dentistry and the Chapel Hill Public Library, to encourage people to engage with the literary arts. The installation is a collaboration between Arts Everywhere, UNC Press, the College of Arts & Sciences’ Department of English and Comparative Literature, and publishing company Short Edition. “Bringing literature into the daily lives of people who may not normally be in that fictional fold is going to be valuable to everybody,” said Daniel Wallace, Creative Writing Program director and professor.

On the first night of its debut in Swem Library, the new short story dispenser printed so many short stories – 200 to be exact – that the machine ran out of paper.
“As a library, we want to help students engage in creative activities, pleasure reading and personal enrichment,” said librarian Liz Bellamy. “And the fact that we went through an entire roll of paper the very first day shows that students really want that too,” said Liz Bellamy.

In today's all-too familiar pandemonium of everyday life, free time is often a distant daydream. Reading? For many, that too seems far fetched. The French publishing company, Short Édition, has a solution — one that offers intellectual breaks of spontaneous prose combined with passion. It's known internationally as "The Short Story Dispenser," and it's inspiring a community of readers with more than 100,000 short stories by 9,000 authors from classic literary short works, such as Shakespeare and Virginia Woolf. "Stories elevate our lives," said Jennie Lay, adult programs coordinator for the Bud Werner Memorial Library.

Short story dispensers now seeking talent from local writers

Image of Short story dispensers now seeking talent from local writersThe short story dispensers located across campus are now seeking content submissions from local writers on top of Penn State students and faculty members.
Penn State launched the short story dispensers on campus and in Schlow Library earlier this year to become the first institution to collaborate with Short Edition of Grenoble, France.
The dispensers allow you to choose a short story that takes anywhere between one and five minutes to read. Two of the four dispensers on campus are located at the entrances of the Pattee and Paterno Libraries.
“Since Schlow has a Short Edition dispenser from the start, it made sense to explore the possibility of adding community stories to our community content,” said Hailley Fargo, student engagement librarian for Penn State University Libraries.
