Dear Husband

dear husband,

what if - what if?
what if I could not be
your maid-in shine,
slaying deranged household grime?

my squire, my fine.
I wonder if I could not your baker be,
if I could not boil toast
would you still find affection for me?

if I could not tend to your precious heart
or much as dust the ticking clock,
would you find any use in me?
oh Romeo! what if I am not a beauty?
what if I did stop the curl and make
if I did not dress in frills and lace
if my toes had fuzz, and my face crinkled at the lines
then... would you know?

what if I could not warm our bed
and spent my burning nights instead
engrossed in word,
dreaming in madrigal,
and caressing a canvas fine;
till the rooster sang its rough and simple tune.
then swoon in a rumple of whiskey and wine,
would you cherish me still?

where is my soul, my amore?
where is your tender heart?
how do you love me?
how can I know?
