Home Again

I’d never really been the “group study” kind of guy. Until high school, I’d always powered through on my own, got good grades, etc.

Then came... 9th grade biology. Holy crap, was I terrible at that. Nothing I’d learned up to that point seemed to apply.

Luckily, I wasn’t the only one – there were a few others like me, kids who’d never needed more support than themselves for something.

Together, we got by in the class alright, and got on with each other very well. But those group study sessions... they were the greatest time of my life. I felt like I’d found my home.

Suddenly, it was the end of the year. He was taking a block STEM course, she was aiming for the AP, they were going on the honor track... We weren’t going to be able to do this again next year.

The final was approaching, and we were terrified. 60 questions in 60 minutes, closed note, rigorous and demanding... but not very well monitored.

I told them in confidence that the answer key was leaked. I don’t know how they cheated – I went with the classic bathroom break strategy.

Good thing you don’t get to see your final scores on your report card. Here’s to doing better in summer school, guys!
