We Dream of Artificial Sheep

I am not a god. I am simply the law of this universe.

Without context, that statement sounds arrogant. Egotistical, even. Perhaps even ridiculous. Therefore, to put things into context, I shall offer an explanation.

The nature of the world was as such: it wasn't really the world. No. The world had ceased to exist some time ago. Yes; ten years ago, the world as we knew it had come to an end, societies had crumbled and governments had fallen. Nothing of the old world order was left.

After the Disaster, there were only a scant few of us remaining. The few people who survived were the only traces of the grand civilization that had once been. But nobody wanted to let it die. We had to build a new reality.

Maybe this sounded even more ridiculous. Regardless, this was the premise that we had to work on. It was the premise that I, and the rest of the people in the room with me, had to work on.

The request had come in only early this year. I supposed that in the midst of all the rebuilding and the couldn't-work-outs and the general lack of manpower after the Disaster there was not much time or mental bandwidth for future planning. Yet someone had come up with an idea, and the idea had come through the grapevine to seven individuals, and we were then all gathered into the same location with the makings of a great plan:

To rebuild the world.

It was arrogant. Egoistical. Ridiculous. How was a ruined society supposed to rebuild a better one? I didn't like the idea when it was first proposed, and I didn't like the idea today. It was too much like a bunch of fools playing god. And fools playing god had been what had ruined our world in the first place.

But at the end of it all, I still agreed. I conceded to being a part of the order that would create a new world order. There was nothing else to do. I had to admit it: the proposal was right. For society to progress, it was better to have failed trying than to have never tried at all.
With the six other individuals, then, I began the work. The work towards a new world order.

Therefore, the nature of the world was as such: it wasn't really the world. The world had ceased to exist some time ago.

This was a simulated world created by the hands of seven fools playing god. And I was its law. I was its maker.

I was its main programmer.
