Little Copper Penny

A little girl sat surrounded by gloom
Not knowing a soul, not knowing what to do
There were so many people, and so little room
Her grandfather was dead, and chrysanthemums were in bloom
But coming through the crowd to where she sat
Was a little old man in a blue felt hat
He pulled from his pocket a little copper penny
He asked "My dear, do you have any?"
She shook her head, for she had no pennies
To her surprise he reached behind her ear
And as he pulled out a penny, he exclaimed "Here!"
With that the girl let out a laugh
And he gave her the penny, and that was that.

The little girl puzzled over the little old man
And she put her penny in an old tin can
She asked her mother, "Who is that man?"
She replied "You know him, that's Uncle Sam!"

The girl sat again, surrounded by gloom
Not knowing a soul, not knowing what to do
There were so many people, and so little room
Her grandmother was dead, and lilies were in bloom
But coming through the crowd to where she sat
Was the little old man in his blue felt hat
He pulled from his pocket a little copper penny
He asked "My dear, do you have any?"
She shook her head, for she had no pennies
Again, he reached behind her ear
And as he pulled out a penny, he exclaimed "Here!"
With that the girl let out a laugh
And he gave her the penny, and that was that.

The girl loved to visit Uncle Sam
And she took along her old tin can
He told her stories and gave her pennies
And as she grew up, she had very many

The young lady stood, surrounded by gloom
She knew lots of people, but she didn't know what to do
There were so many people, and so little room
Uncle Sam was dead, and pansies were in bloom
She saw a little girl sitting in a room full of gloom
Not knowing a soul, not knowing what to do
The young lady wore Sam's hat, and feeling very proud
She made her way through the busy crowd
When she reached the girl, she pulled out a penny
She asked "My dear, do you have any?"
The girl shook her head, for she had no pennies
The young lady reached behind the girl's ear
And as she pulled out a penny, she exclaimed "Here!"
She gave the girl a hug, to go the extra mile
And after all was done, the little girl smiled
