Words Unspoken

To my unborn child,

Yearning to hold you in my arms, I think about what you will look like. Will your eyes resemble mine or your fathers'? Will you smile from ear to ear or sheepishly as you allow the on-going moment to form a memory in your brain? I picture your tiny fingers wrapping around mine as you sleep soundly , while the world continues to exist in chaos.

I write this letter because as your mother, there will be things that I will not be able to say for I will have so many different roles to play in your life; a care-giver, a protector, a friend, a guide, a supporter, a believer, a driver, the list is endless. As I juggle those roles, the moment might be overwhelming and what you make of it might be different from what I hoped. So as we experience this mother-child journey together, here are the words I want you to remember.

I don't have the answers to every question and solutions to every problem, and that's okay. I do know that I will figure it out. I will fall down and crumble into pieces for the most unexpected reasons, and that's okay. I am sure of picking myself up so I can continue to move forward.

I will protect you but your life does not belong to me. You are meant to spread your wings and fly so you can discover the treasures of the world the way you see fit. Whether next to me or on the other side of the world, I will always love you.

The world is filled with unlimited opportunities and obstacles because other humans have created them. Humans strive for criticism whether you succeed or fail, whether you are able or unable. Hear them out and see if there is anything you can use to become the best version of yourself, but don't allow their words to control your emotions and your actions. It's not worth it. Your opinions and thoughts about yourself are the only ones that should matter.

Relationships with other humans are important, but the one with yourself is the most important one. You are in control of how far you can go and what you will become, not your parents, not your family and friends, not your college and definitely not your community. When you understand, value and cherish this relationship, all the obstacles you encounter will be easier to overcome instead of paralyzingly daunting.
Listen to your body, if your memory fails you, your body will help you remember things in ways you will least expect. Your body is the most precious materialistic item you will ever own. Protect it and don't let anyone hurt it, especially not those who you are particularly fond of.

As there are two sides to a coin, there will always be at least two sides to any situation. Assess them before coming to a conclusion. Uninformed decisions will lead you straight to your downfall. Always learn, the more you read the more you learn and the more you question and the more you see. A lack of knowledge will leave you to rot in fear. Just like I will not have answers to all the questions and solutions to all the problems, so will you. That's okay because you will have learned to find a way out and continue moving forward, always.

Finally, when you meet other humans, allow them to show you who they are before coming to a judgement. Some of them live dark lives and might not even be aware of it. Be kind so you can be the light that reminds others of what it means to be alive but don't let anyone dim it.

To my sweetheart, the one thing I can assure you of is that you will be loved unconditionally.

Your one and only,
Mother-to-be
