The Giant Wave

Image of Short Story
The dazzling, sandy yellow Brazilian beach stretched as far as the eye could see. The enlightened, fresh and cold sea was calm but there were giant waves.

I was holding my pale-blue surf-board; it seemed like a burnt piece of fur.

A perfect breaking wave was racing towards my dad and me. That wave looked like a sparkly diamond and right when I was about to surf it, everything turned dark and the sea went wild. I saw something that would give me nightmares for all eternity.

“NOOOO!” I shrieked and screamed. My voice was the sound of a train chimney as I saw what had happened.

My brother’s color was draining away from his body as he was being dragged down by a twenty-feet tall wave.

That wave seemed two times bigger than a medium sized table and every time he freed himself from the watery chains, he got gulped back down to the deep depths of the ocean.

My eyes started to sting, big, wet, salty tears were rolling down my cheeks, I was so desperate because I knew that he couldn’t possibly survive; that wave was too strong for him.

I would rather sink underwater and never come back instead of having to watch this horrible scene and not being able to do anything about it. I was so distraught. My heart became Usain Bolt and started to race.

My dad shouted “You stay here and I’ll go get your brother!” I gripped my surf-board and stared at my dad while he pranced into the water and disappeared from my view.

One minute passed but it seemed like an eternity, a wave of panic rushed towards me and I started to tremble. Suddenly, a thought dashed into my head:

Why does it have to be me?

Why do I have to suffer?

I started to imagine tons of woeful things that had happened to Bernardo and my dad.

Just when I was giving up hope, my dad leaped out of the water carrying my brother on his back.

Their mouths became vacuum-cleaners and they were sucking all the air around them.

My brother was a sheet of paper. Water was rushing out of his mouth as if it were a fountain.

The darkness started drifting away, the light came back after a while and the sea calmed down.

I went galloping towards them and hugged them so tightly that their eyes were about to pop out of their heads.

I felt so relieved.

I was about to become a giant blob.

They were alive!
