Jury Selection

When my mother lost her wedding ring
down the kitchen drain,
I felt her grief (I was 4 years old)
as if a mountain had slid down.

I heard her on the telephone
trying to get somebody to come over,
to help her get it back before Dad got home.

My uncle Elwood came with a toolbox,
shy but sure and willing to help.

He dismantled the drainpipes,
Mom looked on, pale and breathless.

He came out from under the sink with the ring.
She grew pink and breathed again.
Dad walked in, unaware of what had happened.

Her apron became a wedding dress
and Uncle Elwood a priest.

Then he put the drain pipes back together,
and I went back to playing,
glad my mom and dad were married again.
