The first-ever Short Story Dispenser was created by Short Édition, a French company and independent publisher of short literature. At the push of a button — 1, 3 or 5 minutes — random stories are printed on-demand on papyrus paper from their international literary community.
Penn State University Libraries entered into an innovative agreement with Short Édition in May 2017 to bring its first short story dispensers to any university worldwide. The dispensers also will deliver original Penn State student, faculty and staff writing into the hands of the public and encourage dialogue between readers and authors.
Four dispensers have been installed in Penn State libraries and other locations across the University Park campus. The fifth is in Schlow Centre Region Library in downtown State College, the latest initiative of an increasing partnership between the neighboring libraries.
Preliminarily, dispensed story content will include stories submitted by other Short Édition users, including their best stories translated from French. This custom online content management platform has been rolled out for the Penn State community's use to upload content from all campuses, for stories' delivery via short story dispensers, with plans to incorporate the platform into curricular use at some point.
We at Penn State understand the struggle to get people to spend less time on their phone and more time reading literature.
